Thompson, and Munitions Center and School on Redstone Arsenal where she met her future husband. They both worked in the Curriculum Development Division but in different branches. Love blossomed and romance led to their marriage on Aug. 16, 1969. They had one daughter and one son. Later when her husband received a promotion to the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command’s Training Management Institute, Ft Monroe, Virginia, they moved to Newport News and Yorktown, Virginia. For 17 years Carol worked in the Guidance Office of Warwick High School, Newport News, Virginia, where she became a dearly beloved person by administrators, teachers, and students. After Carol and Homer retired in 1994, they moved to Fayetteville to be near their respective mothers. Carol worked in Lincoln County High School Guidance Office before retiring finally. Carol and Homer have enjoyed their retirement years by traveling to see their grandchildren in Virginia and Texas. They especially loved traveling with special friends to various places in the south; those destinations were never the same afterwards and they were bemused by it all! Carol was an avid reader and went through several Kindles.

Carol is survived by her husband of 56 years, Homer Thompson of Fayetteville; son, Christopher Scott Thompson of Bacliff, Texas; three grandchildren, Cameron Scott Thompson of Newport News, Virginia; Ki-Lee Chase Thompson and Robert Colby Thompson of League City, Texas; and one great-grandchild, Cayson Scott Thompson of Newport News, Virginia; sister, Anne Harper of Huntsville, Alabama; and several nieces and nephews and a host of special friends and neighbors.

In addition to her parents Carol was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheri Lee Thompson Woodall of Greensboro, NC and her sister, Lynne Gordy Shaffer Fello of Huntsville, Alabama. In addition to be welcomed into her heavenly home by family members, Carol was welcomed by members of the McDonald Coffee group which existed for about 15 years in the former building. This group of friends became a loving family unit without rival. Greeting Carol was Wilma Moore, David Hopkins, Lewis Forrester, John Willy Hancock, Mary Alice Brooks, and Mike Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on April 12, 2026, at the Fayetteville Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she was a long-time member. The Rev. Tim Smith, church pastor, and Reverend Ennis Hyman officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 1 p.m. until time of the service.

Carol was born in Meridian, Mississippi on June 13, 1942, to James E. Gordy and Nell Harper Gordy. She was raised in Quitman, Mississippi, Orlando, Florida, and Selma, Alabama. Her father was in the Occupation of Japan and returned to the United States following World War II to begin his civilian occupation. The family moved to several locations to include their hometown of Quitman, Mississippi, Orlando, Florida, and Selma, Alabama then to Huntsville, Alabama. The family settled on Monte Sano Mountain in Huntsville where she spent her formative years. Shortly after her father began his new job in Huntsville he had several heart attacks which caused his death in Dec. 5, 1954. While living on the mountain she graduated from Huntsville High School Class of 1960.
