Vera Annie Jane

Vera Annie Jane
Osmer Britton, 87, was born on Oct. 2, 1938, in Plevna, Alabama, at the home of her grandparents, William and Sarah Howell, and passed away peacefully on April 23, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
She was the daughter of Thomas M. Osmer and Hazel Howell Osmer and grew up in Plevna, Hazel Green, and Meridianville during her elementary school years. During her high school years, her family moved to Huntsville, where she attended Butler High School. She graduated with the Class of 1955, completing her studies a year early.
Vera went on to attend Florence State Teachers College, now known as the University of North Alabama, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education. She began her career teaching shorthand and typing at Sparkman High School.
She later worked at Thiokol and Boeing, where she met the love of her life, Charlie Britton. They were married on Nov. 5, 1963.
After the birth of their only child, Holley, Vera chose to leave the workforce to become a devoted stay-at-home mother. Following the purchase of the Britton family farm, she returned to work with the U.S. Army, where she faithfully served for 40 years before retiring in 2014.
Vera had a deep love for simple joys and meaningful traditions.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, and playing the piano. She was well known for her tea cake cookies and her award-winning carrot cake. She loved gospel and classic country music and especially enjoyed artists such as George Jones and Daniel O’Donnell. She also loved dancing, sitting on the porch, and taking walks with her daughter and granddaughter. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Charlie Britton. She is also survived by her beloved daughter and son-in-law, whom she lovingly considered her son, Holley and Dennis Bunfield; her treasured granddaughter, Lucy Jane Bunfield Britton; her brother, Paul Osmer; her sisters-in-law: Doris Osmer, Agnes Britton, Louise Britton, Vera Murdock, and Sara Coble; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at a young age, where she later served as the church pianist. She remained a faithful member there until its closing, after which she attended Bevill’s Chapel Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 27, 2026, in the chapel of Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home with John Howard and the Rev. Benny Berry officiating. Burial followed in Britton Cemetery.
