New turf in ‘The Pit’

Lincoln County High School’s Meadows- Thompson Stadium, known as “The Pit,” is getting a full makeover. Crews from Jean’s Lawn and Garden have started removing the old grass from the hallowed ground to prepare the field for the 2026 season.
The project also includes reworking and maintenance of irrigation on the practice field.
“There’s a lot happening,” said LCHS Athletic Director Jason Dobbs. “We’re stripping the field down to the basics — removing turf and installing new sprinkler and drainage systems. The old turf will be reused at Flintville Middle School. Taking it out so it can be reused takes longer, and it has to be loaded and taken to Flintville by truck but it helps the school system more.”
“After we remove the grass, getting ready for new turf takes time,” Dobbs added. “We have to treat the soil to kill any leftover roots, then smooth and level the ground for the new grass.”
“We’re also sprigging and updating the practice field,” Dobbs said. “We’re fixing some sprinkler heads too. The practice field gets a lot of wear and tear from daily use. These upgrades will help the team get ready for Friday night games.”
The work is being coordinated by former Falcon Brad Jean, who previously replaced the turf on the University of Tennessee’s field. “We work on natural grass fields all over the Southeast,” Jean said. “I’m glad the school is keeping real turf, and it’s great to work close to home. This place means a lot to me, and we’ll make sure the school has a field to be proud of.”
Falcon Football opens its 2026 season with a road game on Aug. 21 against Marshall County, followed by their first home game Aug. 28 against Independence.
