24th annual Jr. Fishing Rodeo is June 6

The 24th annual Jr. Fishing Rodeo will be held Saturday, June 6 at the Stone Bridge Park canal. Presented by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the City of Fayetteville Parks and Recreation, and Elks Lodge #1972, the rodeo is for kids up to 12 years of age. The event will be from 8 a.m. until noon, with registration at 7 a.m.

Professional sports bass fisherman Clay Dyer will once again be at the rodeo. Alabama-native, Dyer was born without any lower limbs, no arm on the left side and a partial arm on the right. His motto for life is “If I can, you can.” He began fishing when he was five years old and by age 13, he was tournament fishing. According to his website, Dyer refuses to use special equipment, wanting to cast with one hand as others do with two. He casts by tucking the rod under his jaw and whipping it around with a quick left-to-right twist. He reels fish in while holding the end of the rod under his chin. He ties knots with his tongue and unhooks fish with his teeth.

In preparation for the rodeo, the pond will be stocked with more than 2,500 pounds of catfish. Some poles, tackle and bait will be available for use; however, participants are encouraged to bring their one fishing gear. Prizes and trophies will be awarded, including tagged money fish.
