James Vernon Cothren, 72, of Hazel Green, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025. He was born on March 29, 1952, to the late Horace and Mildred Eakes Cothren. He worked at Scott’s Orchard and he attended New Day Bible Church.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Ann Cothren; one granddaughter, Abigail Cothren; and four sisters, Juanita Cothren, Ruth Hicks, Lila Faye Caldwell and Jeanette Swinford.

Mr. Cothren is survived by one daughter, Tammy (Brent) Dabbs of Taft, Tennessee; one son, Anthony (Rachel Michelle) Cothren of Hazel Green, Alabama; seven grandchildren, Brittney (Wade) Watson, Aaron (Angel) Watson, Amanda (Travis) Taylor, Levi Lanier, Emma Cothren, Alyssa Cothren and Tessa Cothren; seven great-grandchildren, Bayleigh Riggs, Gracelyn Riggs, Bellamy Riggs, Dallas Riggs, Axel Watson, Gauge Dabbs and Ty Taylor; four sisters, Yvonne Hicks, Sarah Price, Linda Riddle and Nancy Bankston; and three brothers, Johnny Cothren, Frankie Cothren and David Cothren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, in the chapel of Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home with Bro. Tyler Riddle and Bro. Spencer Hardiman officiating. Burial followed in Gatlin Cemetery.
