Scammer poses as FPU representative
Ascammer posing as a Fayetteville Public Utilities representative recently contacted a local resident claiming they owed the utility a back payment, according to a Fayetteville Police Department report.
The report, prepared by Patrolman Derek Jordan, stated the resident told the caller he was not behind on his payments. The scammer, who called twice, then reportedly said they (FPU) looked at the resident’s bank statements.
FPU CEO/General Manager Britt Dye stated, “At Fayetteville Public Utilities, a late notice is mailed out when a customer’s payment is not received by the due date. FPU will not request payment over the phone or through email. Please be vigilant as scammers can fake emails or phone numbers to look as if it’s from FPU. If you have any questions about your account, contact FPU directly at 931-433-1522.”
Most scams are conducted through phone calls, emails and texts. FPU will not ask for gift cards, prepaid cards or money transfers as forms of payment. Scammers can fake emails or phone numbers.
