Break-in reported at Fayetteville residence
Fayetteville Police responded to a report of a burglary and breakin at an Eastgate Circle residence last Tuesday morning (July 21). According to Sgt. Aaron Vick’s report, a 69-year old woman slept while someone removed the screen from a kitchen window, pushed in the blinds and knocked the curtains to the floor.
15 of 40 County Commission candidates participate in forum
Of the 40 candidates seeking election for the 24 county commission seats in the Aug. 6 County general election, 15 participated in the July 9 candidate forum sponsored by the Elk Valley Times and Elk River Media. Of the 15, two were incumbents. Several candidates said they were committed to prior engagements.
Back-to-School Community Baptism set for July 25-26
Aback-to-school community baptism will be held from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. on July 25 and July 26 at the Elk River public access located at 196 Stonebridge Drive.
Nonagenarian is still fiddlin’
Nonagenarian S. Douglas Barnes fiddles some lively, old-time tunes for the enjoyment of visitors during the recent open house held at the Greer Cabin at the Camp Blount Historic Site. As a child, Barnes visited relatives in this cabin when it was located in Petersburg decades ago.

Patrolman Ryan Thomas set his path while young
Born and raised in Lincoln County, Ryan Thomas thrived on playing football at Fayetteville High School. Even before graduation, he determined he wanted a military career. “My family was shocked about it — that after the second year in high school — I wasn’t going to college to play football,” he said.
Too cool
Onyx takes a dip in the pool during some of the hottest days of summer, so far. She’s cooled off and ready to play. Lincoln County will most likely experience a wet weather pattern with some thunderstorms this week. Temperatures look to remain quite warm, with daily highs mostly hovering in the mid-80s.

Petersburg BOMA approves budget and fills board vacancy
The Petersburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved on second reading an ordinance adopting its fiscal year 2026-27 budget beginning July 1, 2026 and ending June 30, 2027. Before Mayor Shantel Gatlin called the monthly meeting to order, a public hearing regarding the budget was held. However, no one in attendance signed up to speak. The public hearing was adjourned.
