Emily Garner named FHS Lady Tiger basketball coach

Emily Garner, a former collegiate athlete and coach, will lead Fayetteville High School’s Lady Tigers on the court next season.

Fayetteville City Schools officials said Garner has a strong background in player development and leadership. She played high school basketball at Scottsboro High School, where she earned three years of varsity experience despite overcoming injury. During her time at Scottsboro, Garner was recognized as an All-Regional player, a two-time All-Area selection, and became the school’s all-time leading three-point shooter. As a junior, she helped lead her team to its first Final Four appearance in years, marking a milestone for the program.

In addition to basketball, Garner also competed in volleyball and tennis, showcasing her versatility as a multi-sport athlete.

She signed to play collegiate basketball at Freed-Hardeman University, where her role evolved following an ACL injury. Instead of stepping away from the game, she transitioned into coaching, taking over and leading the JV basketball program at Freed-Hardeman University. Officials said she coached while completing her student teaching, gaining valuable experience balancing academics, leadership, and mentorship.

After graduation, Garner continued her coaching journey at a competitive level, coaching travel AAU basketball with the Southern Starz EYBL program. Her coaching philosophy emphasizes effort, accountability, skill development, and confidence, helping athletes grow both on and off the court.

“I am so excited and grateful for this experience to be able to grow the love of the game through coaching,” said Garner, who will be teaching at Ralph Askins School starting this fall. “I am ready for a fun and successful year.”
