25 years ago April 25, 2001 Teachers of the year – Glen Belcher, Fayetteville Junior High School’s Teacher of the Year, was congratulated by Principal Joel Hastings. Belcher, who has served in education for 30 years, began teaching locally in 1974. He retires after this school year. Sue Armstrong, an educator for 24 years, worked with her fourth-grade students. She represents Flintville Elementary School as its Distinguished Classroom Teacher of the year. Jan Brandon, South Lincoln Elementary School’s Distinguished Classroom Teacher of the Year, reads to her second-grade students. She has been teaching for 10 years. Kay Wiley is working with her fourth-grade students at Highland Rim School. Mrs. Wiley, who has taught for 30 years, is this year’s Distinguished Classroom Teacher for Highland Rim. Mary Dell Sewell, a sixth-grade science teacher, is Eighth District School’s Distinguished Classroom Teacher of the Year. She has been teaching since 1974. Christy Wright, Flintville Junior High School teacher, checks students’ homework during English class. Wright has been teaching for nine years and currently teaches seventh and eighth grades and also coaches cheerleaders one day.”
50 years ago April 22, 1976 Employee honored- Elk Cotton Mills has honored Jim Cannon for 50 years of continuous service at the cotton yarn manufacturing plant in Fayetteville. Mr. Cannon was among 28 employees recently honored, representing a total of 393 years of continuous employment. Mr. Cannon and Herbert Webb, plant manager and vice president, and Earnes Rees Jr., president, admire and engraved walnut gun rack that the company presented to the employee.
Win awards – Top awards were presented to five Lincoln Central High School students Monday night during the annual Lincoln County Junior Achievement banquet. Award winners are Trina Mastin, top salesman; Dennis Eddings, treasurer of the year; Jim Sanders, president of the year; Henry Hampton, top salesman; and Terry Goosby, officer of the year.
Honored at a banquet – Anita Simpson and Wesley Ables are ‘students of the year’ in the Distributive Education Clubs of America chapter at Lincoln Central High School. Presentations were made this week at the chapter’s annual employer appreciation banquet. On hand Mike Storey, president; Lou Bottiggi of Nashville, speaker; Miss Simpson, Wesley Ables, and Mrs. Shan Kelso, district education coordinator at the school.
Bevill serves on board of directors at First Federal – Robert L Bevill, president and chairman of the board of Avalon Dairies, Inc. of Fayetteville, has been elected to the board of directors of Fayetteville First Federal Savings and Loan Association. Mr. Bevill has served as the head of Avalon Dairies for the past 19 years. Before that, he was a field representative for Kraft Foods Co. for 17 years.
