JM Payne Obituary
JM Payne, 91, of Maryville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his home on July 18, 2025.
JM was born on July 14, 1934, in Madison, Alabama, and also lived in Park City, Tennessee.
JM lived a long, full, and faithful life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and unwavering service to many in the Fayetteville area.
JM wore many hats throughout his lifetime — a farmer, steelworker, manufacturer, engineer and accomplished business owner. He was the proud owner of Payne Repair & Service Station in Petersburg, Tennessee.
Known as an ace mechanic, JM had an extraordinary ability to work on both automobiles and machinery with skill and precision.
On Dec. 21, 1991, JM married, Mary S. Payne in Illinois. That very same day, he also surrendered his life to Christ — a moment that shaped the next 33 and a half years of faithful service alongside Mary. Together, they served in their church in many ways and were devoted members of Victory Chapel Church in Fayetteville and Rio East Church in Maryville, Tennessee.
JM deeply loved his family and cherished every moment spent with them. Whether it was time on the water boating, fishing, sharing stories, or enjoying his beloved daily phone calls. JM was most happy at home with a western movie on TV surrounded by those he loved. He lived a rich life, full of purpose, and his legacy continues through generations.
JM is survived by his loving wife, Mary S. Payne. He is also survived by his children, Barbara K. Dial (Leroy) of Illinois, Jeannie Gallant (Gary) of Tennessee, Cookie Drew of Illinois, Charlie Payne of Florida, Jim Bailor (Renae) of Kentucky, Sylvia Alton of Wisconsin, Barbara Bauer (Nick) of Illinois, Stanley Payne (Connie) of Tennessee and Mona Payne of Tennessee.
JM had 25 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
His stepson, Jerry Winemiller of Tennessee, provided JM four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sylvia E. Payne Brown; his father, John Vann, his sister, Sylvia Jean Frazier; and his stepson Randy Winemiller.
A celebration of JM’s life was held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Smith Funeral & Cremation Service – Trinity Chapel in Maryville, Tennessee. Pastor Dale of Rio East Church and grandson, Eric Koch led the service.
