Joel Moore Hastings Obituary

Joel Moore Hastings, 74, of Taft, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Nov. 13, 1951, to the late Ralph and Ann Moore Hastings.

A devoted public educator for 43 years in both the Lincoln County and Fayetteville City school districts, Joel dedicated his life to serving students, families, and his community. He believed deeply in the power of education and made a lasting impact on countless lives through his commitment and integrity.

Faith was central to Joel’s life. He was a member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church, where he led the men’s Bible class for many years.

Joel found great joy on his farm. He dearly loved caring for his cattle, tending to his vegetable garden, and growing his beloved iris flowers — simple pleasures that spoke to his patience and love for the land.

Joel is survived by his wife of 48 years, Debbie Duggin Hastings; son, Thomas (Mary Douglas) Hastings; and daughter, Grace Hastings. He adored his two grandchildren, Rachel Hastings and James Hastings. He is also survived by his mother, Janice Carr; brothers, Bob (Sherrie) Maddox, Steve (Linda) Maddox and Lee (Lissie) Maddox.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Bailey Manor. They were Joel’s second family for the last two years of his life and were sincerely devoted to caring for him.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 Elk Avenue N. Fayetteville, TN 37334, or Fabulous Fifties Foundation, P.O. Box 934, Fayetteville, TN 37334.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, 2026, at First United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Tennessee. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday at the church.
