Real-life superhero surprises young crash survivor during golf tournament fundraiser

A powerful moment of compassion and community unfolded last Saturday at a golf tournament fundraiser at Pebble Creek Golf Club as Yuri Williams traveled from Los Angeles to surprise Brynlee Pruitt, a young car crash survivor.
Pruitt, the daughter of Casey Pruitt and Baleigh Smith, endured a tragic accident last year which claimed the lives of her stepfather Lane Smith and younger brother Sawyer. She and her mother survived. Pruitt was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where her recovery began. Despite unimaginable loss, her family says she continues to show remarkable strength and resilience.
The event marked the 15th annual golf tournament held in honor of Kevin Lee Gentry of Boonshill, who died in a car wreck in 2010 and to raise funds for his two children, ages 3 and 7 months at the time. His daughter is now an EMT and studying to become a doctor. His son is a junior at Lincoln County High School.
This year, tournament organizers Randy Gentry and Jack Williams, uncles of Kevin Gentry, along with his parents Terry and Phyllis, chose to support A Future Superhero and Friends. Kevin Gentry and Yuri Williams shared a special bond; both were longtime fans of the Boston Red Sox.
During Saturday’s event, Yuri Williams — known for his nonprofit work across all 50 states — arrived in a golf-themed Deadpool costume, entertaining participants as they completed 18 holes to raise funds. After the tournament, guests gathered for lunch and awards.
As Brynlee sat quietly, event organizer Debbie Miahnahri from Fayetteville, also Kevin Gentry’s aunt, shared Brynlee’s story with the crowd. When asked if she knew Deadpool, Brynlee smiled and said, “No.” Moments later, Deadpool made a surprise entrance, joking with the crowd before approaching Brynlee.
He first led her to a table of plates and utensils, pretending they were her gifts before quickly correcting himself and guiding her to a table filled with toys. The toys were donated by Toys For tots and Miahnahri. Yuri Williams said her face lit up as she laughed, thanked him, and embraced her surprise hero.
Following the surprise, Terry and Phyllis Gentry announced they had raised $3,211 for Yuri William’s nonprofit. Expressing deep gratitude, Williams said recent financial struggles have made sustaining his mission difficult and the donation would help keep his efforts going. He told about losing his mother to cancer and battling five years of depression before finding purpose through service. Inspired by his love for his daughter and childhood influences like Fred Rogers and LeVar Burton, he said he continues to spread kindness nationwide.
Baleigh Smith, Brynlee’s mother, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the surprise and the impact it had on her daughter. Before leaving, Brynlee asked if Deadpool would return for her birthday next month. He jokingly said he would if Miahnahri covered his flight. Williams said he is scheduled to return to Tennessee in October as a guest judge for the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue. He said he will try to make Brynlee’s birthday wish come true.
Miahnahri said Williams has rented a movie theater and will be taking 100 underprivileged, homeless and disabled children to see “Mario.”
Williams said he remains committed to one goal: bringing hope, joy, and compassion to those who need it the most.
