Doris Smith Obituary

Doris Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Jan. 24, 2026, at Elk River Health and Rehab at the age of 98. A lifelong resident of Lincoln County, Doris was born on Sept. 30, 1927, to the late Roy and Velma Ray Gatlin.

A graduate of Elkton High School, Doris dedicated her life to the simple joys of home and family. Whether she was tending to her garden, finding the perfect gift while shopping, or preparing a favorite meal, her hands were rarely still. Her greatest delight, however, was found in the laughter of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she spent countless hours babysitting and nurturing.

In addition to her parents, she is reunited in death with her husband, Everette D. Smith; her grandson, Brian Philip Smith; and her siblings, Houston Gatlin, Mary Forbes, Edward Gatlin, and Alma Jean Birdsong.

Her legacy lives on through her children, Tom (Lynda) Smith of Columbia, South Carolina, Phil (Debbie) Smith of Fayetteville, Tennessee, and Darlene (Mike) Hall of Dellrose, Tennessee; grandchildren, Thomas Smith, Jennie Smith (Tony) Dollar, Christian (Kelly) Smith, and Stephanie Hall (Jeff) Coble; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Tony Demonbruen officiating. Burial followed at Shiloh Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Shiloh Cemetery Fund, c/o Teresa Gentry, 12 Cunningham Hollow Road, Fayetteville, TN 37334.

Higgins Funeral Home is honored to be serving the family of Doris Smith.
