Tigers get week of wins heading into tourney

The “big game” atmosphere is alive and well on Tiger Hill with the return of a strong student section and spirited cheerleading squad as Fayetteville High School’s Lady Tigers and Tigers head into district tournament play this week.

Fayetteville High School’s Tigers closed out regular season play on a winning streak, adding two more to the “W” column last week with victories over Eagleville and Mt. Pleasant.

Against Eagleville on the road, the Tigers took an early lead, 15-8, after one period and never looked back, carrying a 28-20 lead into the intermission. By the end of three, the Tigers were up 46-32 and closed out the game with 11 in the fourth to get the 57-48 win.

Brayden Hockett and Isaiah Thomison had big nights on the scoreboard, each adding 17 on the night. The team put up 8 3-pointers in the game.

The Tigers continued their winning ways on Thursday, getting the 49-43 win over Mt. Pleasant in the regular season finale at home.

The game stayed close throughout play, with the Tigers down by 1 point, 9-10, after the first period of play and ahead by 3 points, 24-21, by halftime. Fayetteville added another 15 in the third, holding Mt. Pleasant to 12, and both teams put 10 on the board in the final frame to give the City Tigers the 49-43 win.

Brayden Hockett led the Tiger scoring with 11, followed by Marquese Nance with 10. As they did earlier in the week, the Tigers put up 8 3-pointers.

The Tigers were scheduled to begin district tournament play on Tuesday night, hosting Huntland at 7 p.m.

The win against Eagleville had put the Tigers in a tie with the Eagles, which was broken with a coin toss, according to Coach Chris Murdock. With the Tigers losing the toss, the team finished in fourth place, pitting them against the 5-seed Hornets on Tuesday of this week.

If the Tigers defeat Huntland, they will move on to the semifinals Thursday night at Cascade.
