Tigers by the numbers

Fayetteville’s Tigers went down to Eagleville, 61-56, in the Region 4 championship game last week. FHS won one out of four attempts competing against the number 1 ranked (AP) Eagles during the course of the season - all were battles.

The Tigers led much of the game by single digit margins, but as in many barnburners, trips to the line decided the victor. Fayetteville shot well, dropping 6 of 7 attempts, but the Eagles were 14 of 16, hitting on 9 of 10 fourth quarter tries when FHS was in a must-foul situation.

The runner-up spot puts the Tigers on the road Monday night of this week traveling to Clay County (Celina) in the Sectionals (Sub-State). The winner advances to the state tournament; the loser goes home. The Bulldogs defeated Monterey in the Region 3 championship, 50-38, bringing a 32-2 overall record, their only losses coming in holiday tournaments. The Tigers are ranked fifth, the Bulldogs third in AP Class A polls.

The Eagles (27-3) will host Monterey (27-9) which will also be played Monday night.

Julius Dixon and Floyd Williams were named to the All-Region Tournament team, along with Eagleville’s Ryley McClaran, Ethan Cobb and Mari Stodemire, who was tournament MVP.
