With the recent passing of Dr. O. Tom Johns, Jr., long-time orthopedic surgeon in Murfreesboro, a scholarship has been established in his name.
Through personal experience with Johns, Lincoln County’s Kay Delap Eason felt moved to implement the honor.
“Dr. Johns was so much more than just a doctor,” Kay said. “He cared for my family and everyone he had contact with on a personal level. He was a father figure to many and a man of the highest integrity in his field. He did a lot of work for a variety of people from Lincoln County through the years, not just athletes.
“When I started thinking about a scholarship in his honor, there were so many positive reasons to pursue it,” she continued. “I wanted it to be something that he and his family would be proud of. I talked with his daughter, Rebecca, on the phone several times, and finally we met and spent hours talking about her dad and what the family would like to see in the scholarship. They were very receptive of the idea.”
The scholarship will be known as the “Dr. O. Tom Johns, Jr., Scholarship of Excellence and Integrity.”
“We’re working on a criteria with the family,” she added. “It’s important to me to have as much input from them as possible. It will go to a Falcon football player. Rebecca said he praised and bragged on Lincoln County and their football program many times through the years. Coach T (Louis Thompson) was an honorary pallbearer at his funeral.
“We welcome any contributions from individuals in the community,” she noted. “Dr. Johns helped a lot of local people for decades; he was widely known. We’ll make the announcement of the recipient at the Falcon football banquet at the end of the season.”
