Fayetteville High School’s cross country team had two girls qualify for the individual D1-Girls TSSAA State Cross Country meet held Saturday at the Steeplechase in Nashville.
Both girls ran a strong 5K. Out of a field of 170 runners, Isabella Martin posted a 23:48, finishing 39th, and Meg O’Connor finished 54th, with 24:37.
“We had an outstanding season,” Coach Chris Davis said. “Fayetteville’s boys finished eighth overall team at the regional meet with Robbie McVey leading the team, finishing 21st with a time of 20:44.
“The girls qualifying for state is remarkable,” Davis continued, “but they have run well all year long. Isabella finished seventh at the regionals, sixth at Don Davidson Park, sixth at Davy Crockett Park and 10th at the Community XC. Meg was 10th at the regionals, seventh at Don Davidson Park, seventh at Davy Crockett and 12th at Community XC.
“Fayetteville Middle School girls Hannah Martin and Erica Cox also ran a strong season,” he continued, noting that Hannah is a perennial top 10 finisher on the middle school circuit with a best of second overall at Webb XC.
“We are very proud of this group of young men and women for their excellent performances and their conduct and sportsmanship throughout the season,” he added. “Special thank you to our runners, Isabella Martin, Meg O’Connor, Robbie McVey, Matthew Giffin, Gaige Smith, Jayden Fox, Cade Hopkins, Jackson Killebrew, Erica Cox and Hannah Martin, for representing our schools and community and each family and our administration for supporting our team. We are looking forward to an even better 2020-2021 season.”
