Lincoln County High School’s cardiac Falcons kept fans on the edge of their seats to the buzzer, going down to Giles County, 38-34.
LCHS came from behind with a couple scores in the final frame that gave them the opportunity to win the barnburner, but penalties kept the Falcons from the end zone and put points on the board for the ‘Cats.
The Falcons led briefly in the second period, 14-13, after Cade and Rudy Cooper scored on passes from 40 and 29 yards out, but the ‘Cats were up 20-14 by the break.
Giles was first to score in the third quarter, taking the lead, 26-14.
LCHS answered on a 52-yard run by Rudy Cooper trailing 26-20, but the Bobcats scored again late in the period. The Falcons were down, 32-20, headed to the fourth.
It seemed the ‘Cats had salted the game away scoring early in the third. But, trailing 38-20, the Falcons took advantage of a couple of interceptions that gave the offense opportunities to score. Rudy Cooper pushed it in from the 3 yard line after starting at the Bobcat 22 yard line.
The Falcons’ final score came after an interception by A.J. Alcorn at the Lincoln County 43. Eight plays later, Jake Sorrells connected with Cade Cooper from 26 yards out; it was a 38-34 ball game.
LCHS attempted an onside kick in the final seconds, but Giles County recovered and ran the clock out for the win.
“I’m proud of our guys,” Coach Tim Johnson said. “Each week, they’re fighting and competing hard, but there’s a difference in working hard and working smart - we didn’t work very smart tonight. We shot ourselves in the foot too many times.
“You give a good team with the weapons they’ve got that many opportunities, and it’s going to be hard to keep pace with them.
“We’ll have our work cut out for us against Shelbyville,” he added. “We’ve got some injuries that affected us tonight. A lot will depend on how severe those are. We’re not very deep at some positions.”
The Falcons are off to a 2-1 start and travel to Shelbyville Friday night with kickoff at 7 p.m.
