The Elk Valley Times has selected Jack Massey as the Lincoln County High School basketball Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2023 season.
Massey averaged 10 points a game and shot 30% from the 3-point line. He also led the team in charges.
“I’ve been coaching Jack for four years now,” said Coach Mark Cornelius. “Honestly, I admit I have really coached this young man hard. He could have responded negatively to that but he didn’t do that. I’m so appreciative of him and proud of him getting All-District and now this award. He is well deserving.”
The Elk Valley Times sat down with Massey for “10 Questions” to get to know him a little better.
EVT: What was your initial reaction when you learned you were receiving this award?
JM: I was excited. Our season wasn’t what we had hoped for, but being recognized for all the hard work was nice.
EVT: The season didn’t go as planned obviously, but your team never quit. Why was that, do you think?
JM: We all cared about each other. We all believed we could have done better. We were in every game we played. We just couldn’t finish it out.
EVT: Would you ever want to be a contestant on the Bachelorette?
JM: (Laughing) No
EVT: What would you say is Coach Mark Cornelius’ best quality?
JM: He never gave up on us. He could have just stopped coaching us as hard every day because our season wasn’t very good. He never did that, he coached us hard every day.
EVT: What players should we watch out for next season?
JM: Reese Smith and Maddox Franklin for sure.
EVT: What was your favorite moment from this season?
JM: The Tullahoma win for sure. We blew them out and they didn’t see it coming.
EVT: Who wins if you and Coach play a game of horse?
JM: Me for sure. (laughing) Side note: Coach Cornelius did not agree.
EVT: 98.5 or 105.5 radio station, which is your favorite?
JM: I’d say 98.5
EVT: How do you think you improved on the court from last season?
JM: Confidence for sure. I was more of a role player last year. This year stepping into a starting role and being on the court a lot really built my confidence.
EVT: What do you want to say to Coach Cornelius about what he has meant to your basketball team this year?
JM: I want to thank Coach for never giving up on me and for coaching me hard. I wouldn’t have gotten any of these awards without him.
