Sybil Rives Sumners, 96, of Fayetteville, passed away on Thursday (Sept. 6, 2018) at her residence. Mrs. Sumners was born on Nov. 30, 1921 in Lincoln County to the late James and Mattie Bartlett Rives. She worked for Blue Ridge Shirt Company/Serbin Manufacturing and retired as the press department supervisor. After retirement, she worked as a greeter at Walmart and volunteered at the hospital for 20 years. She was a member of Fayetteville First Baptist Church. Survivors include her sons, Larry (Peggy) Marshall and Joe Christopher Counts, all of Fayetteville; stepchildren, Bonnie (Terry) Reavis and Mike (Cheryl) Sumners; grandchildren, Lisa Marshall of Fayetteville, Scott Marshall of Tullahoma, Shelby (Morgan) Dorn of New Market, Ala., and Natalie (C.J.) Pitts of Cleveland; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her second husband, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilson Marshall; third husband, Thomas Wilburn Sumners; brothers, Clyde and Fred Rives; and sister, Glendon Cunningham. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9, at Higgins Funeral Home with Dr. Jon Hathcock officiating. Burial will follow in Flintville Cemetery next to her second husband, Robert L. Counts. Visitation with the family will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 12 p.m. until time of service at 2 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home. Higgins Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
