Matalea Bickel Marks, age 63, passed away peacefully in Anconcito, Ecuador on Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2020) after a year-long battle with cancer. Matalea is survived by her siblings, Carol (Bill) Marsh of Lewisburg, Edwin (Leigh) Marks of Gulf Shores, Ala., and Scott Marks of Anconcito, Ecuador. She is also survived by her niece, Caroline (Luke) Buckley of Lewisburg, and great-nieces, Eleanor, Julia and Marian Buckley; and nephew, Brian (Mary Courtney) Marsh of Jackson, and their children, Ben and Anna Battle Marsh.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Lewis Brown and Caroline Marks of Fayetteville and also Gulf Shores, Ala. Matalea was born on Aug. 20, 1956 in Nashville. She attended Fayetteville Central High School and graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1978 with a bachelor of arts degree. After moving to Arlington, Texas, in 1978, she began working for Michaels, an arts and crafts company, as a new store opener around the country. In 1982, she relocated to Murfreesboro and took a position as office manager of a gas company. In 2005, Matalea decided to move to Foley, Ala., to be closer to her aging mother. She became a teller for Wells Fargo Bank where she worked until she retired in 2018. Matalea was accomplished at loom weaving and stain glass working and often made gifts of her work. She was a generous individual who loved animals and was passionate about zumba, walking, gardening and traveling. At Matalea’s request, no funeral service will be held.
