Jessie Stewart McFerrin

Jessie Stewart McFerrin, 93, of Fayetteville, passed away Wednesday (Oct. 10, 2018). A native of Lincoln County, she was born March 8, 1925. She was the daughter of John and Maggie Spray Stewart and attended school at Harms, Eighth District and graduated from Central High School. Jessie left Lincoln County to continue her education at Erskine College where she majored in home economics. After graduation from Erskine, she taught home ec at Blanche High School until her marriage to Blakely McFerrin in 1948. After their marriage, Jessie and Blakely moved to Greencastle, Ind., where she once again taught home ec in the Putman County, Ind., school system. She continued teaching until she resigned to raise a family. She and Blakely are the parents of three sons, David, John and Robert, and have three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. From Indiana the family moved to Atlanta, Ga., and then to Barbourville, Ky. When the three sons were well along in school, Jessie once again returned to the classroom. This time she taught in the Knox County, Ky., Head Start Program, and soon became program coordinator. While teaching in the Head Start Program, she continued her studies at Union College in Kentucky and earned a master’s degree in early childhood education. After earning her master’s degree, she taught in a church sponsored kindergarten for two years and in the public schools of Barbourville for six years before retiring to Fayetteville. After retiring to Lincoln County in 1985 she once again became active in the Fayetteville Associated Reformed Presbyterian church, the denomination of her youth. While there she taught in the youth department, served as chairman for various departments of the Women of the Church, and served a term as president of the Women of the Church. Her post-retirement work with the Fayetteville ARP church was not Jessie’s first work with that denomination. She first became a member of the ARP church at the age of eight when she joined the Elk Valley ARP Church. The family later moved their membership to the Fayetteville ARP Church where, even as a teenager, Jessie began serving in the church by being the pianist for the Sunday School Department. During her later years, she was well known for visiting people in the nursing homes and enjoying her friends at the Senior Center. She is survived by her sons, David McFerrin and his wife, Karolyn, of Barbourville, John McFerrin and his wife, Karen Kostol, of Morgantown, WV, and Robert McFerrin and his wife, LaFaye, of Seattle, Wash. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Hall, and a very special sister-in-law, Roberta Kidd, of Fayetteville, as well as three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Blakely McFerrin, and her brother, James S. Kidd of Fayetteville. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. at Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip Bunch officiating. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery.
