A Fayetteville resident was the victim of an old scam with a new twist Thursday, according to a Fayetteville Police Department report.
A Facebook advertisement was offering $300 per week for people to put an advertising sign on their motor vehicle. A scammer sent the local man a check for $1950.49, and he was to deposit it in his bank account, according to the report by Sgt. Mark Browning.
The target was then instructed to take out $300 for the first week’s payment, and the rest of the money was for the installers who would put the sign on the vehicle. He was told to send $1,600 to the Yacht Club Birch Beer Company using pre-paid eBay cards in $200 increments.
In all, the victim lost nearly $2,000.
