End of an era for FHS Tiger gym
After decades of service, the gym floor at Fayetteville High School is being retired. Originally opened in 1968 as Fayetteville Junior High School, the unique parquet floor produced countless district and conference championships.
“There’s been a lot of excitement in that gym and on that floor going back to the days of Coach Max Raby,” FHS Principal Adam McCormick said. “We hate to see the old floor go, but we look forward to having a new one. It was at the point we had little choice – it had been sanded and refinished as many times as possible. It was thin, and there was a problem with the paint adhering – it lasted far beyond expectations from when the school opened.
“We originally had it scheduled for May 18th, but with the uncertainty of graduation, we had the opportunity to begin work on May 4th,” he added. “With the work getting underway on our football field next week, we wanted to be sure the gym was an option for graduation which is currently scheduled for June 26th. There’s a lot of factors involved, but we’re hoping everything will fall into place. It’s been a difficult year, we want to do as much for the kids as we possibly can.”
