Gears & Fears cyclo-cross event, hosted by The Imagination Library of Lincoln County, promises to be a family friendly event on Oct 6 at Don Davidson Park.

This Tennessee Bicycle Racing Association and USA Cycling certified race is the Imagination Library’s 2018 fundraiser.

Prior to the adult evening races, a kids’ Halloween costume one-lap race begins at 2 p.m. with parents pushing infants in strollers, followed by tricycle races and bike races for children up to age nine. The kids’ race begins at 3:45 p.m.  Helmets are required for participants ages three to nine years of age. The cost is $5 per person, and each racer will receive a goody bag.

“Hundreds of hours have been invested by volunteers into getting these trails ready for the first-ever night cyclo-cross race in Tennessee,” said Kevin Freeman, an organizer of the race. “Riders from Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and Kentucky will be all smiles after racing in the park. Special thanks goes out to our parks and recreation staff, Chris Mitchell, J.B., Glen, Ray and Hunter for all they do.”

The park’s Trails for Kids has two miles of mountain bike trails and bicycle skills area with two pump tracks, skinnies and three jumps, as well as a sand pit and death spiral, “just a few of the barriers these athletes will encounter,” said Freeman.

Beginning at 5 p.m., the cyclo-cross, mixed single-speed, 30-minute race begins with racers peddling through the illuminated course. Next is the Category 4/5 Women, Category 1/2/3/4 Junior for ages 10-18 and Category 4/5 Men. The 45-minute race includes Masters for ages 35 and above, Masters 45-55 and Pro/Category 1/2/3 Women. The final 50-minute race that takes place at 8:30 p.m. is the Pro/Category 1 and 2 Men and Category 3 Men.

The race entry fee is $35, and the deadline for online registration is 10 p.m. on Oct. 5.

Food trucks will be on-site, as well as bicycle shops from the Tennessee Valley. To register, go to https://legacy.usacycling.org/register/2018-2698.

The Imagination Library of Lincoln County, through the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation, sends approximately 1,350 books each month to children from birth through age five at no cost to the parents. No federal or county funds are used, nor does Dolly Parton pay for these books. Individuals, clubs and organizations graciously contribute to this cause; however, more donations are needed.
