Application deadline

The deadline to submit an application for the third annual art and music scholarships sponsored by the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Arts Center and the Fayetteville Rotary Club is only four weeks away.

Applications must be submitted by midnight on Feb. 8.

The third annual art and music scholarships are open to all eighth through 12th grade students in Lincoln County. Two scholarships will be awarded, one for art and one for music. The first place award for each scholarship is $500 and can be used at the discretion of the student and his or her parents. Second and third place awards will be $250 and $100, respectively.

The scholarships are the idea of Melanie Laten, a local art teacher and the owner of the Laten House Bed and Breakfast that is located in Fayetteville. Student artwork will be on display to the public in the Arts Center gallery on Saturdays in March.

The public is also welcome to come listen to the auditions for the music scholarships on the first three Saturdays in March. The finalists will be announced on March 22, and the awards ceremony will be held on March 30. These events coincide with National Children’s Art Month.

Funds for the scholarships are provided by the Arts Center and the Fayetteville Rotary Club. Three local businesses are also helping to raise funds for this scholarship. Each business has items for sale that will fund this scholarship. The Arts Center encourages the public to visit these businesses. The businesses are The Blue Door Thrift Store, Hidden Treasures and Kudzus.

To be eligible for these scholarships, the student must be actively pursuing his or her art interests in a private, home school or public school setting; the student must have competed the eighth grade and must not have graduated from the 12th grade; the student may not be older than 19 years of age on March 30, 2019; and the student and at least one parent or guardian must be a current, permanent resident of Lincoln County as of Jan. 1, 2019.

The official application form must be submitted online through the Arts Center website. Internet capable computers are available at the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Public Library, 306 Elk Ave North Fayetteville, TN 37334. Handwritten applications will not be accepted. Applications for scholarships must be submitted by midnight on Feb. 8. For more information, call 256-651-7648, or visit http://FLC-ArtsCenter.com/scholarships.

Audio and video recordings for the music scholarship can be submitted on CDROM. CDROM recordings must be delivered to the Laten House Bed and Breakfast at 1203 Washington West, Fayetteville, TN, 37334 by 6 p.m. on Feb. 8. The recordings must be on standard CDROM in an audio or video format compatible with a Windows PC.

Artwork must be delivered to the Arts Center at 303 Main Avenue South, Fayetteville, by appointment from Friday, Feb. 15, through Sunday, Feb. 17. Students will be responsible for setting up their own displays with the assistance of Arts Center members.

All artwork must remain on display in the gallery through the awards show on March 30. Students may retrieve their artwork on Saturday, April 6, between 9 a.m. and noon. If you cannot pickup your artwork during this time, then you will need to schedule an appointment with the Arts Center president to retrieve your artwork.

Three finalists for each scholarship will be announced by March 22. All applicants will be notified via email, and the finalists will be announced in The Elk Valley Times and the Arts Center website. The winners will be announced at the end of a public show at the Arts Center on March 30.

Art scholarship finalists will give a 10-minute presentation about their work at the show, and music scholarship finalists will perform for 10 to 15 minutes.
