Fayetteville First United Methodist Church will be presenting its yearly Christmas cantata on Sunday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
This year’s cantata is “And Glory Shone Around” by Lloyd Larson and Douglas E. Wagner. The 30-member choir and 14-piece orchestra will present this work that celebrates Love’s Perfect Light.
With a blending of new melodies and familiar Christmas carols, this is a work that recalls the dark days of anguish for ancient Israel, only to give way to the dawning of a new day of light and love when Christ was born. Through the scripturally based narration and music, singers and listeners are once again invited to the humble birthplace of the Savior.
The orchestra is made up of professional musicians from the Huntsville area and includes a string quintet, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The group will also include Vickie Halcomb on piano and Barry Petty as conductor.
“As we prepare to present this collection of music of peace, we are reminded of the story of the birth of Christ and are thankful for the miraculous birth,” said Barry Petty, director of the FUMC Chancel Choir.
“And Glory Shone Around” is a musical gift to the Fayetteville community and is presented free of charge to the public. Fayetteville First United Methodist Church is located at 200 North Elk Avenue.
