This year’s Winter Gala, hosted by the Friends of the Library, was a great success! This event, held on Jan. 19, completed the Friends fundraising efforts for 2012.
As many know, the Friends had focused all their attention on the library’s Genealogy Room last year, and I am happy to report that they surpassed their goal of $7,000! As such, I would like to take this opportunity to thank not only the hardworking members of the Friends group but also the entire community for coming out to the events, buying books and showing such incredible support for this most worthy cause! I personally am deeply moved by such commitment, and it only reinforces my determination to continue to work to improve and expand the Genealogy Room.
In the near future, the community will be able to see the results of this hard work by way of new materials, furniture, etc.
During the Gala, I mingled with our guests, and a reoccurring theme wound through my conversations: more events held at the library. I could not agree more with the notion of utilizing this beautiful building as a community center to host all types of events. Ideas ran rampant at the Gala, including hosting concerts again and opening up space for meetings. So, in the coming weeks and months, I will be working to find more events to host here at the Public Library.
On the calendar just now is a most exciting occasion! On April 24, Gov. Bill Haslam’s wife, Crissy, will be at the Library from 2-4 p.m. to promote the importance of kindergarten and first graders to obtain library cards. All, of course, will be welcome and more details will be related as plans progress. This event is in partnership with the Retired Teachers Association here in Lincoln County.
I am also pleased to announce that planning for our Mother-Daughter Book Club is well under way! Staff member Kelsi Murphy will be facilitating, and she has already compiled a fantastic list of books and discussion points. If you are interested in joining the Club, please call us at 433-3286, email at firstname.lastname@example.org or comment on our Facebook page.
Tuesday nights are a great time for club meetings and other events, as the Library is open until 8 p.m. If you have any other ideas for potential happenings for late nights at the Library, please let us know!
