We are off and running with our summer activities! We would like to thank all of you who stopped by to donate materials for our experiments and crafts. It is all much appreciated! We would also like to thank Sugar Shack Farms for coming out and helping us with our Kitchen Science program and the yummy cupcakes they brought along.

We conducted experiments with baking soda and yeast and learned about how ingredients come together to cause chemical reactions that result in the foods we eat. Also, thank you to my husband, Travis, for coming out and sharing his expertise on Earth Science.

We erupted our volcano, made oceans in a bottle and floating jellyfish and had a lot of fun. Next week we will be learning about robots with our high school robotics team on Tuesday and on Saturday we will learn about the Science of Art, particularly the art of Leonardo DaVinci. We will make our own robots, sketch from nature in sketchbooks we make and fly paper planes. It will be great fun!

We have re-created our children’s area for the summer by moving some furniture and moving in a new train set, coloring castle, blocks and other building toys. So far, the kids seem to love it! Next time you bring the kids, they can play while you browse or use the Internet! We also have movies at 2 p.m. every Tuesday during June. These are all family friendly movies that go along with one of the week’s summer reading themes. Everyone is welcome!

We have really great programs planned for the entire summer! In July we will have Summer Reading Programs specifically for tweens and teens (ages 10 and up). We will do more in depth explorations of robots, use a camera obscura, develop images in the sun with UAH’s photography professor, learn about magnets with C-SPAR (a research facility in Huntsville) and more.

Don’t forget, those that sign up for and complete the reading requirements this summer will be eligible for some really fantastic prizes. Registration for kids up to age 10 ends June 14 and that for teens ends on July 5. For adults we have our lecture series continuing on throughout the summer, along with some additional speakers in July.

We hope to see a lot of you at the library this summer! There is something for everyone in the family!
