Special Olympics volunteers needed

Special Olympics of Lincoln County needs volunteers.

Special Olympics helps thousands of children and adults with intellectual disabilities realize their dreams through sports training and competition. Additional benefits include improved physical fitness and sports skills to enhanced self-confidence and social competency.

However, Special Olympics simply would not exist without the year-round dedication and volunteer commitment of interested citizens. Our local organization currently serves approximately 50 athletes taking part in bocce, golf, swimming, bowling and track and field events. Six to eight of these athletes usually go on to participate in the state Summer Games in Nashville. Another three to four of these athletes participate in the state bowling tournament in Chattanooga.

With additional volunteers, participants could be taken to area and state basketball, volleyball and soccer tournaments, as well.

Families are a constant source of encouragement and support. They understand the importance of the dignity and integrity that is developed through sports and the commitment of giving one’s best effort. Special Olympics in Lincoln County needs volunteers to become a part of this family supporting athletes. From large groups to individuals, Special Olympics in Lincoln County has a volunteer opportunity for everyone.

Volunteers can be an important part of this cause in several ways.

More people are needed to provide transportation to and from events in nearby counties, to help with fundraising and publicity and to assist at events, helping athletes before and after competition, timing runners, setting up sports venues and completing other hands-on projects.

Volunteers are also needed to assist in training programs and to pair with athletes during some events. Working with Special Olympics athletes is fun and extremely rewarding.

Those unable to help directly can be an important part of the Special Olympics cause by making a donation to help keep this vital effort going. One hundred percent of funds received are used to send our Lincoln County athletes to local and state games, so if a volunteer asks about taking out an ad and supporting Special Olympics, please consider doing so as a family, individual, organization or business.

Special Olympics of Lincoln County would appreciate help at any level. For further information or to volunteer, please call county coordinator Jo Goldasich at 625-6382 or Deanna Stone at 425-0240.
