South Lincoln’s Eagles won the County Middle School championship Friday night, 39-28 over Highland Rim’s Hornets. Highland Rim had claimed the county title the past three years, but 2014 was the year of the Eagle.
Both teams wrapped up their regular season at 7-1 in county action, splitting on the hardwood. In tournament play, the Eagles advanced, defeating Blanche, 37-21 – the Hornets won over Flintville, 44-29.
South Lincoln is led by second year Coach Titus Wright assisted by Ben Fuhs. Highland Rim has been led by veteran Coach Heath DeHart since 2009 – he is assisted by Skylar Mefford.
Friday night the Eagles jumped out to an early lead, taking the opening period 11-0. Those 11 points would be the margin at the final buzzer.
Highland Rim got their game on track, taking the second period 14-10 led by Holt Richardson with 10 points. The Eagles were up 21-14 going into the break. Both teams picked up six points in the third. South Lincoln was up 27-20 going into the final frame. DJ Jones poured in eight points in the fourth quarter for the Eagles. South won the final six minutes 12-8 and was on top 39-28 at the buzzer.
DJ Jones led for the Eagles with 20; Antonio Zita, 7; Rouslan Gains, 6; Ben Bassham, 3; Deven Hudgins, 2; and Tyler Pruett scored 1. South Lincoln was 1 of 3 from the line and had four from the arch coming from Jones with 2. Zita and Bassham had 1.
Holt Richardson led for the Hornets with 15; Kyle Clem and Brian Alford scored 5 and Jonathan Norton had 3. Highland Rim was 6 of 13 from the line and hit two from the arch on shots coming from Richardson and Clem.
