South Lady Eagles take Tip Off title

South Lincoln’s Middle School Lady Eagles swept the field in the 2012 Lions Club Tip Off Championship.

Ninth Grade Academy again hosted the weeklong tournament.

The Lady Eagles matched up against the Fayetteville Middle School Lady Tigers in the title game and finished on top, 15-8.

It was the Lady Eagles who sent Fayetteville to the losers’ bracket on Thursday night during the tournament in a barnburner, 33-30. But, both teams struggled to put the ball in the hole during the championship.

The Lady Tigers had to play two games during the day, advancing to the finals defeating Highland Rim’s Lady Hornets in the first game Saturday in overtime, 21-18. Lady Hornet Liz Currin sent it into free basketball, dropping two from the line with 21 seconds in the game. With the score knotted at 16-16 at the end of regulation, D.J. Horton hit a three and dropped a shot from the line to seal the win for the Lady Tigers.

In the championship game, the only points that came in the first quarter were from the line. Ali Sandlin dropped one for the Lady Eagles, Amy Cobb for the Lady Tigers.

Emily Ogle and Leslie Frye added points for South Lincoln in the second. The Lady Eagles took a 7-1 lead into the intermission.

City won the third quarter, 5-3, with a basket by Carly Fee and a three-pointer from Ashley Yatsko. At the end of three, the Lady Eagles were on top, 10-6.

South Lincoln won the fourth period, 5-2. With 20 ticks on the clock, Sadie Wolaver dropped the final basket of the night. The Lady Eagles finished with the title, 15-8.

Emily Ogle led for the Lady Eagles with 6 points; Morgan Scivally, 4; Sadie Wolaver and Leslie Frye, 2; and Ali Sandlin had 1.

South Lincoln was 5 of 10 from the line, shooting 50 percent.

City was led by Carly Fee with 4 points. Ashley Yatsko had 3 and Amy Cobb finished with 1.

The Lady Tigers were 1 for 7 from the line, shooting 14 percent. Ashley Yatsko had one from the arch.
