First Class Cadet Nevada Shelton and the U.S. Military Academy Flying Team competed at the 2013 National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s Finals at Ohio State University May 5-10.

Competing against over 40-plus schools – champions from around the country, including more than 250 pilot competitors – Shelton, a senior set to graduate May 25, placed 10th in the nation in the navigation competition.

The competition grades every aspect of a cross country flight, starting with the preflight planning, fuel burn predictions, and timing over all checkpoints to arrival at destination. Points are deducted for every second off estimated time of arrival prediction and every ounce of fuel over or under burn.

“The flight preparation was very demanding,” said Shelton. “We only had a short time to prepare after receiving our route information. I was disappointed we (the team) didn’t win overall; however, I take great pride in beating the Air Force Academy and Auburn.”

Shelton placed 43rd out of 250 pilots in the over final competition standings.

“To compete against the top aviators in the country was an honor I will not forget,” he added. “I thank the academy for allowing us to compete and look forward to my new career as an officer and aviator in the United States Army.”
