Dr. James R. Armitage presents a certificate to Dr. Theresa Morrison, the featured speaker during a recent Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting.

The John. R. Massey Camp No. 152, Sons of Confederate Veterans, celebrated the January birthdays of General Robert E. Lee and General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson at their monthly meeting on Jan. 10.

The guest speaker for the evening was Dr. Theresa Morrison, M.D. Her presentation was titled, “Stonewall Jackson, Before He was Famous”. She spoke to the large audience gathered at the city municipal auditorium and kept them spellbound for 45 minutes.

Dr. Morrison detailed how the tough childhood of Jackson made him the man and general he became during the War Between the States. She covered the period of Jackson’s life from childhood to his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Many of the soldiers from Lincoln County served under Jackson during the war.

The camp also announced the 2013 camp officers: Dr. James Armitage, commander; Mack Pickett, 1st Lt. Commander; Matthew Armitage, 2nd Lt. Commander; and James Shelton, Adjutant.

The SCV is a heritage organization for men that had a documented ancestor that served honorably in the Confederate Army or Navy.

“We are not affiliated with any other organization,” said Dr. Armitage.
