The Foundation for Rural Service announced recently it is increasing its support of rural youth in their first year of college, university or vocational-technical school thanks to a $50,000 donation from Telecom Management Services of McMinnville and Mayfield, Ky.

Scholarships made possible by TMS’s donation will be awarded in $1,500 increments to one student per year who is a customer of one of three TMS-managed companies: Ardmore Telephone Co., Ardmore; Ben Lomand Telephone Cooperative, McMinnville, Tenn.; and West Kentucky and Tennessee Telecommunications Cooperative (WK&T; Mayfield, Ky.) In addition, one student per year who is a customer of any member company of NTCA – The Rural Broadband Association will receive a $1,500 TMS scholarship.

The donation and new scholarships were announced at the Rural Telecom Industry Meeting & EXPO in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., in February. TMS scholarship recipients will be notified later this year.

“All of us at TMS have been looking for a way to support our youngest customers, many of whom need help paying for college,” said Trevor Bonnstetter, chief executive officer of WK&T and Ben Lomand Telephone.

“We believe we have found a wonderful partner in the Foundation for Rural Service and trust that the foundation will put this gift to good use by selecting deserving students in our home states of Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama and in rural communities all over the country.”

“We couldn’t be more thankful for this significant contribution, which will give dozens or rural youth a leg up in their pursuit of higher education,” said Elizabeth Crocker, FRS executive director. “This generous donation brings the total scholarship dollars we will award this year to $98,000. Our hope is that the students benefiting from this support will return to rural America to enhance and enrich their communities with education and experience.”
