Owens new principal at Highland Rim

Billy Owens has been named as the new principal of Highland Rim School.

He succeeds Garth Garris, who was recently hired as principal of Lincoln County High School.

Owens comes to Highland Rim after serving as principal of Tanner High School for the past 20 years. Tanner is a K-12 school in Limestone County, Ala.

Owens started his career at Athens Bible School before moving to West Limestone High School and then to Tanner. Prior to entering administration, he served as a teacher and coach. During his career, he led his team to win the Limestone County boys’ basketball championships in 1985, 1986 and 1987. In 1986, he led his Tanner boys’ basketball team to win the 1986 Alabama State Class 3A Boys Basketball Championship. For more than 20 years, Owens served as director of the Limestone County Basketball Tournament.  He is also a member of the Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame.

He and his wife, Debbie, have two sons, Kyle and Kent, and five grandchildren, Cameron, Jared, Isabel, Desmond and Grayson. He enjoys staying active in sports, playing golf and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Owens said he is excited to join the staff at Highland Rim and looks forward to getting involved in the community.
