Obituaries for July 17 edition

Martha Ann Foster, 63, of Petersburg, died Sunday (July 7, 2013) at St. Thomas Hospital. She was born in Lawrence County on Oct. 3, 1949 to the late Otis and Mozella Wright Clayton. She was an LPN, was a member of the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama and was of the Church of Christ faith. Mrs. Foster is survived by her husband, Robert Foster of Petersburg; son, Chad and Jill Wright of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandson, Eli Wright; sisters, June and Gerald Howell of Hazel Green, Ala., Debbie and David Miles of Bowling Green, Ky., Mary and Gary Chapman of Cherokee, Ala.; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family received friends on Thursday evening at Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home. Sarah Jean Simmons, 78, of Fayetteville, died Tuesday (July 9, 2013) in Big Springs Nursing Center in Huntsville, Ala. She was a native of Lincoln County and the daughter of the late Archie and Flora Mims Patterson. Mrs. Simmons was a former seamstress and was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Tommy Simmons of Huntsville and Ricky Simmons of Flintville; two daughters, Jill Durham of Flintville and Lori Edmunds of Springfield; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Memorial services were conducted Saturday morning at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Ted Smith officiating. Higgins Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jean Smithey, 73, of Elora, died Thursday (July 11, 2013) at Huntsville Hospital. She was born Aug. 26, 1939 in Winchester, the daughter of the late Hughie and Mary M. (Medley) Stovall. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Pickett. Surviving are husband, Howard Rowland Smithey, Sr.; son, Timothy Pickett of Winchester; daughter, Debbie (Gary) Gardner of Tullahoma; grandchildren, Tabatha Garner, Jeremy Pickett and Jerica Pickett; brothers, Bobby (Shirley) Stovall of Greenwood, Ark., and James (Barbara) Stovall of Winchester; sisters, Shirley Jones of Winchester, Linda (Harold) Holliday of Chattanooga and Evelyn Green of Evans, Ga.; step-children, Michelle Lyle of New Hope, Ala., Howard (Deshannon) Smithey of Elora and Scotty (Tina) Smithey of Huntsville, Ala.; step-grandchildren, Joe Lyle, Renee Lyle, Phillip Lyle, Jeremy Rich, Kaitlyn Smithey, Eric Smithey, Kayla Smithey and Logan Smithey; as well as several nieces and nephews.
