A Detroit, Mich., man faces identify theft and trafficking charges after Fayetteville police launched an investigation here based on reports from local residents.
Kharon Khari Rayford, 26, 16851 Hubble Street, Detroit, was booked into the Lincoln County Jail Tuesday after a 21-count indictment was handed down. The Alabama A&M student is charged with 20 counts of identity theft and one count of identity theft trafficking.
Of the 20 instances of identity theft in this case, only two were reported to police, according to Sgt. Detective Adam Eubanks with the Fayetteville Police Department. The remaining 18 incidents of identity theft were only found as a result of the two that were reported.
According to the Secret Service and the Federal Trade Commission, identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the United States, but criminal prosecution of identity theft is rare.
