Louie visits AskinsEach year as Askins Elementary kindergarteners learn about the letter “E,” employees from Fayetteville Public Utilities are invited to talk about electricity and electrical safety.

Students watch an educational video featuring Louie the Lightning Bug. It teaches them how to use electricity safely in their homes and to be aware of overhead power lines when playing outdoors. Students also learn from “Sniffasaurus” or “Sniffy”, FPU’s natural gas mascot, how to recognize the smell of natural gas if they ever suspect a gas leak.

FPU linemen Terry Honea and Stephen Reese provided a show-and-tell presentation as they demonstrated their safety gear and bucket truck for the students.

Following the video and safety presentation, students were invited to participate in FPU’s Louie the Lightning Bug Coloring Contest. Prizes are given to all who participate with special prizes awarded to first, second and third place winners in each classroom. The top prize is a collectible Louie stuffed doll.

This year’s first place winners at Askins Elementary were Parker Moyers, Macy Hancock, Fayla Keller, Trinity McFerrin, Gracin Collins, Elizabeth Douglas, Brinlee Bradford and Sam Knott. Second place winners were Isabel Owen, Braila Hockett, Garry Vaughn, Alyssa Swearengin, Ella Murdock, Gabby Adams, Bella Gordon and Will Coble. Third place winners were Travonta Covey, Brooklyn Moore, Labreeia Parks, McKinsey King, Kerston Dollar, Danielia Ibarra, Khalia Whitaker and Montrell Patrick.

FPU’s Chuck Barnes and Gina Warren assisted with the safety presentations and challenged students to remember one of Louie’s key safety phrases, “When (power) lines are down, don’t hang around.”

FPU has shared safety messages with elementary students for many years using the Louie the Lightning Bug and Sniffasaurus characters. If you school would like to schedule a safety presentation and visit from Louie the Lightning Bug, please contact Gina Warren at FPU, (931) 433-1522, ext. 166.
