FPU, Louie visit SBAPre-kindergarten students at Stone Bridge Academy leaned about electric and natural gas safety recently as representatives from Fayetteville Public Utilities visited their school.

For many years, FPU has shared safety messages using the Louie the Lightning Bug and Sniffasaurus, “Sniffy,” characters, and this year Louie the Lightning Bug was able to make a personal visit to the school.

“During the safety presentation, we teach students about all the great things electricity and natural gas do for us, but we also remind them that if not used correctly, electricity and natural gas can hurt us,” said Gina Warren, FPU’s public information specialist.

Students watch an educational video featuring Louie the Lightning Bug. It teaches them how to use electricity safely in their homes and to be aware of overhead power lines when playing outdoors. Students also learn from Sniffy how to detect the smell of natural gas if they ever suspect a gas leak.

Following the video, students were invited to participate in FPU’s Louie the Lightning Bug Coloring Contest. Prizes are given to all who participate with special prizes awarded to first, second and third place winners in each classroom. The top prize is a collectible Louie stuffed doll.

Louie contest winnersThis year’s first place winners at Stone Bridge were Kaydan Parks, Jeriah Wingard, Abigail Becnel, Emily Dalton and Kasi Goodwin. Second place winners were Maris Golden, Chloe Jacobs, Taylor Hale, Lily Krishnan and Hannah Russell. Third place winners were Jacob Priego, Kayla Knight, Danika Shockley, McKenzie Pierce and Marley Partin.

Chuck Barnes, FPU’s safety coordinator, assists with the presentations and challenges students to remember one of Louie’s key safety phrases, “When (power) lines are down, don’t hang around.”

“Louie is always a big hit with the students,” said Warren.  “No doubt, it will be a day that neither the children nor Louie will soon forget.”
