We had a wonderful turnout for our event with First Lady Crissy Haslam on April 24, and we would like to thank all the kids that came out and received their first library cards!

We would also like to thank the Imagination Library for organizing the event and bringing Mrs. Haslam here. She was very impressed with our beautiful building. We enjoyed snacks and an awesome story hour with Miss Sue reading poetry and making crafts.

We have had 178 new library cards issued to children within the month of April thanks to this event and the work of teachers at Ralph Askins Elementary! Because so many of Lincoln County’s kids are interested in having their own library cards, we have decided to bring in special cards just for them.

Within the next month, we will be receiving these colorful new cards with fun designs that we hope children will enjoy, and they will make wonderful keepsakes once they graduate to adult patron cards. This was an idea that came to me after reading the essay contest entries. So many of them spoke of the joys of receiving their first cards and the sentimental feelings they have about that experience, and we hope these new cards will enhance that experience for young children.

I received a phone call from Secretary of State Tre Hargett’s office on Wednesday with an offer to reorganize our Legislators at the Library event. Thanks to the Secretary’s efforts, we will have Sen. Tracy, Reps. Marsh and Spivey, and of course, Mr. Hargett, here on May 3 at 2 p.m. The Secretary, who is an avid public library supporter, was so disappointed that the legislative session prevented their last trip to the library that he took it upon himself to reorganize it on our behalf.

This event is open to the public and will be free in form with no formal speeches or ceremonies. We will take the legislators on a little tour, and they will be free to mingle with anyone present, and all can enjoy some light snacks as they meet their state representatives. We hope you will take a minute to tell them why you appreciate your local library and encourage them to continue their efforts to support public libraries across Tennessee.

We are in the process of planning some great story hours for May and June, and serious work on our Summer Reading Program is underway. Don’t forget, May 4th is Star Wars Reading Day and celebrations at the Library begin at 10 a.m. We hope to have you all at this event and others because we love to see you at the Library!
