Lincoln County High School’s tennis team participated in the District 8-AAA Tournament held at Sewanee on Thursday of last week where 75 matches were held during the course of the day.
LCHS saw both doubles teams made up of Daniel Selfridge and Matthew Posey for the boys and Chelsi Wheat and Lauren Gower for the girls fill the second place finish, earning a spot in the region tournament.
“We had a great tournament,” said Coach Jonathan Brown. “Daniel and Matthew, Chelsi and Lauren all advance to the regionals to be held in Shelbyville May 12.
“Daniel is playing at the level of tennis I expected the whole season, and Matthew played his best match in the three set win over Columbia in the semifinals,” he added. “Chelsi and Lauren played their best matches of the year in the semi and finals.”
In boys’ singles play, Patrick Scott went down to Columbia’s Parker Truelove, 2-6, 0-6, and Barrett Wright was defeated by Shelbyville’s Taylor Peterman, 1-6, 4-6.
In the boys’ doubles, Brian Shouse and Justin Plunkett were defeated by Shelbyville’s Green/Sudberry, 2-6, 4-6. Daniel Selfridge and Matthew Posey defeated Lawrence County’s Burris/Delane, 6-2, 6-3, then defeated Franklin County’s Schmidt/Gazzola, 6-3, 6-0. On Friday, the team defeated Columbia’s Benesh/Liggett in the semifinals, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the championship, Shelbyville’s Merlo/Clanton finished on top, 2-6, 5-7.
In the girls’ singles, Jasmine Bello went down to Shelbyville’s Keely Smith, 0-6, 0-6; Haylee McGee won over Franklin County’s Anne Ezell, 6-2, 6-0, but went down in the next match to Columbia’s McBroom, 2-6, 0-6.
In the girls’ doubles, Jordyn Atkinson and Allie Bridge won over Franklin County’s Torres/Prosser, 6-2, 6-0, but went down to Lawrence County 2-6, 1-6 in the next round. Wheat and Gower got a bye in the first round, then defeated Columbia’s Beck/Hood, 6-0, 6-0. The team defeated Tullahoma’s Myers/Brown, 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinals. In the champion match, Wheat/Gower went down in a battle to Columbia’s Hahn/Fisher, 5-7, 6-2, 3-6.
In the boys’ JV singles, Trey Wetjen got a bye in the first round, then defeated Lincoln County’s Killian Lang. Wetjen then won by forfeit over Lawrence County’s Alex Champman. Cody Cantrell won over Kevin Ngenyon from Tullahoma but went down to Columbia’s Lawson Crouch in his final match. Cole Beddingfield won over Columbia’s Ben Tomlin, then won over Tullahoma’s Tyler Batt.
In the girls’ JV singles, Sarah Hall won by forfeit over Columbia’s Gabrielle Chapman, defeated Franklin County’s Hannah Staney but lost to Coffee County’s Kayla Wright. Jordan Dempsey got a bye in the first round, then defeated Coffee County’s Hayley Southerland but went down to Shelbyville’s Monica Hart in her final match.
Bella Beddingfield got a bye in the first round, then defeated Shelbyville’s Jayda Clayton, then won over Lincoln County’s Miranda Richards (who had defeated Lincoln County’s Fasai) but went down to Savannah Hodge from Coffee County in the final match. Jordan Atkinson got a bye in the first round but went down to Coffee County’s Savannah Hodge in her next round.
