The Fayetteville High School Lady Tigers battled well but took a tough District 9-A loss to Community at home Friday night.
The ladies went down, 53-44.
FHS was up at the end of one, 12-11. But, the Viqueens took a 26-23 lead into the intermission.
Depth continues to plague the girls’ program. With Kerry Brown going out with an injury and Lexie Horton fouling out in the third quarter, the Lady Tigers had just five players remaining. At the 7:24 mark in the fourth, the ladies were up 34-33, but Paeshence Thompson committed her fifth foul. FHS had to finish the last seven minutes with four players on the floor.
But, the ladies managed to keep it close. With 2:34 remaining in the game, Community was up, 41-39, but that was as close as it would get. The Viqueens won the final frame, 20-12, against the short-handed Lady Tigers, hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to finish with the win.
Trevah Thompson led for the ladies with 18 points. Jasmine Parks followed with 13. Liz Gurley had 5; Tamia Baker, 4; Lexie Horton and Paeshence Thompson, 2.
FHS hit 13 shots from the paint and 2 from the arch. Three-pointers came from Trevah Thompson and Liz Gurley. From the line, the ladies were 12 of 22.
For their next action, the Lady Tigers continue district action hosting Moore County Tuesday night. On Friday, the ladies travel to Cascade. Game times are at 6 p.m.
