Lady Hornets claim hoops title

Highland Rim’s Middle School Lady Hornets came into the match-up for the county tournament the number three seed with a 5-3 regular season record. South Lincoln’s Lady Eagles were the one seed with a mark of 7-1.

The Lady Hornets are led by Coach Heather Hendrix. Coach Melanie Beddingfield leads South Lincoln’s ladies.

Friday night, with a packed house on hand for the championship game, the Lady Hornets got a little payback for two of the regular season losses, defeating the Lady Eagles, 30-16.

Highland Rim’s ladies advanced to the big dance, defeating the number two seed Blanche Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday night, 33-24.

The Lady Eagles got a bye the first round and defeated Flintville’s Lady Bobcats, 36-17, on Thursday.

The last time the Highland Rim’s ladies held up the championship plaque was in 2005.

Friday night belonged to the Lady Hornets. After a jitter-filled first quarter, Highland Rim was up 6-4 at the end on one.

The second frame went to the Lady Hornets, 10-6, and Highland Rim was up, 16-10, at the break.

In the third, South Lincoln’s Ali Sandlin kept the Lady Eagles in the game, hitting two from the arch, but the Lady Hornets won the frame, 9-6, and were up, 25-16, at the end of three.

From that point on, the Lady Eagles struggled to get the ball in the hole. The Lady Hornets won the final stanza, 5-0, to finish with the win, 30-16.

Brooke Ferguson and Hope Foster led the scoring for Highland Rim with 10 points each. Brooke Lynch had 4, and Lauren Bradley, Liz Currin and Emma Summers scored 2.

The ladies were 6 of 15 from the line. Ferguson had a 3-pointer for the Lady Hornets.

Ali Sandlin led for the Lady Eagles with 11 points. Emily Ogle had 3, and Morgan Scivally had 2.

The ladies were 5 of 11 from the line. Sandlin hit three from the arch.
