Eagle Spirit Karate located in Parks City hosted a seminar on May 16-17 with Dr. Michael Jackson of Spindale, N.C., as the guest presenter.
Terry Mitchell, the head instructor of ESK, stated that all of the proceeds from the seminar went toward benefiting his instructor Sensei Lorraine Lewis of Ashville, N.C.
“Sensei Lewis has recently had some medical issues, and we felt this was a great way to assist with some of her medical bills while giving our students an opportunity to train with Sensei Jackson.”
Jackson is an 8th degree blackbelt in Trias Karate and holds blackbelts in several other styles of karate. The seminar included several topics including, bo staff, power generation, dexterity, martial arts history, body mechanics and empty hand self-defense.
At the conclusion Friday night’s session, Sensei Jackson awarded promotions from Sensei Lewis to several of the ESK students. The following promotions were awarded: Joey Fried and Jurgen Mohr were promoted to Yondan, 4th degree blackbelt; Andy Myrick and Coby Templeton were promoted to Sandan, 3rd degree blackbelt; and Deborah Thomason was promoted to Shodan, 1st degree blackbelt.
On Saturday morning each of the participants demonstrated kata (a set form of movements) for everyone in attendance. After the demonstration, the seminar resumed for the remainder of the day.
“I am so proud of all of our students,” said Sensei Mitchell. “They have great determination and a desire to learn and grow as martial artists.”
Adult and children classes are held at Eagle Spirit Karate three times a week. Curriculum includes: traditional karate, grappling, sparring and self-defense.
