Fayetteville Public Utilities is investigating the possibility of serving gas customers in the Ardmore area currently being served by Athens Gas Department.
FPU officials were approached recently by Athens Gas representatives asking if the utility is interested in serving 158 customers on the Tennessee side of Ardmore. The area would include about 19 miles of line and one industrial customer, Wolverine Tube.
“They approached us to see if we’re interested,” FPU’s general manager and CEO Britt Dye told board members last week.
“We can handle the system, but I need to do my due diligence,” he added.
FPU will contract with Tennergy Corporation, a consulting company, for an amount not to exceed $11,000, to help determine if the purchase is a good move for FPU.
According to Dye, Athens Gas representatives indicated they want to serve customers on the Alabama side of the state line only, allowing FPU to purchase and serve those customer accounts on the Tennessee side.
