The Fayetteville Middle School Tiger baseball team is off to a 3-0 start for the 2013 season.
The team consists of players in sixth, seventh and eighth grades and under the direction of Coaches Billy Jack Netherland, A.J. Russell and Hayes Ellett.
The season opener saw FMS hosting Community Middle School on Valentine’s Day. The Tigers got off to a fast start and quickly put 5 runs on the board. The FMS defense then had to hold off a late-inning rally to take the game, 5-4.
Pitching for FMS were Worth Watson, Lex Marsh, and Colton Wiseman.
With the tying run on second and Wiseman on the mound, he picked off the base runner for the final out of the night.
In the second game, FMS visited Moore County Middle School on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Will Clark was on the mound, and the eighth grader recorded the first no-hitter in school history. Clark went the distance, recording 11 strikeouts and allowing only 2 walks. The Tigers finished on top, 10-0.
On Saturday, Feb. 23, Moore County visited Fayetteville and fell to the Tigers for the second time this season, 7-6. Trailing 6-3 midway, the Tigers rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. FMS held the visitors scoreless in the top of the eighth and produced the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
Pitching for the Tigers were Bill Flynt, Colton Wiseman, Worth Watson and Will Clark.
The FMS Tigers baseball team plays its home games at Don Davidson Park in partnership with the Fayetteville Department of Parks and Recreation. Remaining home games are scheduled for Friday, March 8; Thursday, March 14; Saturday, March 16; Monday, March 18; and Thursday, March 21. Game times are generally 5:30 p.m.; however, check the school website for the most up-to-date information (www.fcsboe.org).
The team is sponsoring “Ralph Askins Night” at its game on Friday, March 8. Ralph Askins students in third grade and under get in free.
