After better than a 20-year absence, the Firecracker Chase has returned to Fayetteville.
Coordinated with Fayetteville Department of Recreation Director Rickey Honey, organizers Steve Swindall and Dawn Dixon brought the event back to life this year. The 2013 Firecracker included a 10.2-mile run, 5K run and one-mile fun run.
“Anytime we can put on an event like this in the city it tickles me to death,” Honey said. “I want us to be more than recreation that involves baseball and softball.
“There’s a lot of things we’re not able to do because of the lack of funding and help – and event like this is great for the whole city.
“Running had slowed down and interest died over 20 years ago,” Honey continued. “But it’s come back in a big way all across the country. I have to give all the credit to Steve Swindall and Dawn Dixon for this event coming off like it has this year – they were willing to come in and help.
“I knew it would take a lot of volunteers,” he added. “We’ve got the parents and kids from the swim team so we’ve got between 70-80 volunteers as well as the support from the Fayetteville Police Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department.”
“There’s races most every weekend in cities across the country,” said Swindall. “The interest of people out and running has brought it back to Fayetteville. We’ve got 250 people registered and that’s a great turnout, especially for the first year event.”
