Firecracker Chase draws over 300 runners

Posted on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 2:39 pm

Despite the threat of the remains of tropical storm Cindy in the forecast, the 2017 Firecracker Chase saw over 300 runners register.

The impact of Cindy moved out of the area in the wee hours last Saturday morning, and the event started on time at 7 a.m. with only a few sprinkles remaining during the course of the race.

The Firecracker continues to be a positive impact to the community – of the more than 300 participants, nearly 250 runners came from out of town, representing five states. The field was made up of long-time supporters, as well as newcomers from as far away as Minnesota.

“Thank you to all of the runners and volunteers who spent their Saturday morning with us Saturday at the Fayetteville Firecracker Chase,” said co-organizer Dawn Dixon. “We are very incredibly blessed that the severe weather moved through just hours before.

“We had 310 people to register for the 5k and 10.2 mile races, up from 2016,” Dixon continued. “We are most proud of the fact that we have numerous runners who have come back year after year to run this race. We recognize many faces, not only from our awesome local running community, but also from out of town and out of state.

“We also need to thank the Fayetteville Recreation Department and Fayetteville Police Department. Fayetteville Recreation Department was on site well before dawn to make sure the course and aid stations were set up properly. The Fayetteville Police Department put in countless hours before today making sure they had adequate staff, including our Lincoln County Sheriff’s Posse, to safely monitor our race course. Runner safety is, as always, of utmost importance, and the Fayetteville Police Department, especially Coby Templeton, deserve appreciation for its efforts.

“Thanks to Fleet Feet Sports for your continued sponsorship and the local Kiwanis Club, who worked the aid stations at Ralph Askins School today,” she added. “We had over 75 volunteers from the Fayetteville Area Swim Team who worked the remaining aid stations and who directed runner traffic throughout the course. We could not have pulled off this race without your help.”
