Falcons fare well in holiday tourneys

Lincoln County High School’s Falcons played in two holiday tournaments over the break. Prior to Christmas, the boys participated in the Madison Academy’s Classic. Before the New Year, the Falcons took a three-day road trip for the Hixson Wildcat Tournament in Chattanooga.

Lincoln County split in the Madison Classic and finished at 2-1 in their match-ups at Hixson.

Overall, the Falcons’ record now stands at 10-5.


Thursday, Lincoln County opened the Wildcat Tourney and went down, 65-44.

Justin Blackwell led the scoring with 12 points. B.J. Thompson had 11; Tradarius Christian, 6; Riley Malone, 4; Jaquez Thompson and Austin Grimes, 3; Ty Hadley and Tyler Jones, 2; and Xavier Talley-Hyde scored 1.

Friday in their second game, the Falcons took on Sale Creek and finished on top, 61-39.

Blackwell led the scoring with 15. Talley-Hyde and B.J. Thompson had 10; Christian, 8; Jaquez Thompson, Grimes and Malone, 4; Hadley, 2; and Cameron Boyd had 1.

LCHS hit 4 from the arch with Christian with 3, while Talley-Hyde and Tyler Jones had 1.

Next, the boys matched up with Rhea County for their final action of the tournament on Saturday and took the win, 63-59.

B.J. Thompson and Ty Lewter set the pace with 12. Talley-Hyde had 10; Blackwell, 9; Christian, 8; Jones, 5; Jaquez Thompson, 4; and Malone had 3.

The Falcons hit seven from the arch with Talley-Hyde, Christian and Lewter with 2 each. Jones had 1.

Madison Academy Classic

Lincoln County opened the tournament with a tough match-up against a strong Madison Academy Mustang team and went down, 78-54.

B.J. Thompson led the scoring with 14 points. Talley-Hyde followed with 11; Blackwell, 7; Lewter and Jones, 6; Malone and Hadley, 4; and Christian had 2.

Lincoln County hit 5 from the arch with Talley-Hyde with 3 and Jones with 2.

In their second game of the Classic, the Falcons took on the Columbia Eagles out of Alabama and hung on for the win, 72-70.

With 3:24 in the fourth, LCHS had their biggest lead of the game, up 63-55, but in the final minutes, the Eagles nailed three from the arch. At the eight-second mark, LCHS was up 71-70. B.J. Thompson made one from the line, and it was a 72-70 ball game. Columbia had to go the full length of the floor in the final seconds, and the Falcon defense kept the Eagles from getting off a clean shot at the buzzer.

B.J. Thompson set he pace with 22 points. Blackwell had 14; Christian and Jones, 10; Talley-Hyde and Lewter, 5; Hadley and Malone scored 3.

The Falcons hit three from the arch with Jones hitting two and Talley-Hyde having one.

Lincoln County returns to district action Friday night traveling to Lawrence County. Game time is at 6 p.m.
